His grandfather (also named René) was a well-known Swiss artist, and his father a writer; he has Bonaparte and Romanov connections on his mother's side. Rene apprenticed under John Houseman, and attended Carnegie-Mellon University; he has taught acting, including acting with masks. He and his wife Judith have two children, Tessa and Remy-Luc, both of whom are also actors. Rene's other interests include gourmet cooking, painting, and photography.

He is a founder of the Matrix Theatre Company in Los Angeles, where he has acted in several plays and also won two Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards for directing Endgame and The Homecoming. (He has also been credited with the names Andrew Robinson and Andy Robinson.)

Alexander Siddig (Dr. Julian Bashir) was born Siddig El Fadil on November 21, 1965, in the Sudan. (His full Arab name is Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig el El Abderahman El Abdul Kareem El Mohammed Ahmed El Mahdi.) His father was Sudanese; his mother was British (and the sister of actor Malcolm McDowell). Another uncle was the Prime Minister of Sudan. Siddig, whose nickname is Sid, grew up in England, and attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. (As a child, he was babysat by Lalla Ward, who played the 2nd Romana in Doctor Who.)

He adopted the stage name Alexander Siddig at the beginning of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's 4th season. During that same season, he and fellow regular cast member Nana Visitor (Kira Nerys) became romantically involved; her pregnancy with their son Django was the cause of the storyline about Kira bearing the O'Briens' child. Between the 5th and 6th seasons, they were married.

Siddig is 6' tall. His other TV credits include the series The Big Battalions; and the TV movie A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia. (Trivia note: it was his performance in the latter production that brought him to the attention of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's creators. Nana's real-life pregnancy was written into the show, explained as Kira carrying the O'Briens' baby Kirayoshi to term.
